Self
"The self refers to the inner self and spiritual state of a person."
Spiritual & Deep Meaning
In Islamic Sufism, the self expresses the spiritual identity of a person. Different types of self represent various stages of the self: Nafs-i Ammarah (the commanding self), Nafs-i Lawwamah (the self-reproaching self), and Nafs-i Mutmainnah (the tranquil self). In Sufism, the training and purification of the self are important for the individual's spiritual development. Educating the self is necessary to achieve spiritual maturity. Islam encourages the training of the self and helps the individual to recognize themselves. In this aspect, the self can be seen as both a test and a source of mercy.
