Nafs al-Lawwama
"Nafs al-Lawwama is the state of the self in which an individual criticizes themselves and questions their mistakes."
Spiritual & Deep Meaning
Nafs al-Lawwama is a state where a person strives to understand their mistakes by questioning their own actions. At this stage, a person becomes aware of their wrongdoings and criticizes themselves. In Sufism, this stage indicates the beginning of the process of self-recognition and correction. At this stage, the self becomes a being that experiences conflict between good and evil. A person can enter the search for inner peace by listening to the voice of their heart. Those in this state of self also wish to purify themselves with feelings of forgiveness and regret. The transition from Nafs al-Lawwama to the stage of Laviye is a significant step in a person's development and approach to Allah. Patience, self-discipline, and self-recognition are essential in the training of this stage.
