Nafs al-Ammara
"Nafs al-Ammara is the level of the self that represents the lowest and worst desires of a person."
Spiritual & Deep Meaning
Nafs al-Ammara represents the most basic passions of a person in Sufism. This level is characterized by a state of inner turmoil, where one is closest to sin and prohibitions. Nafs al-Ammara constantly directs a person towards evil actions, and therefore, it is considered a stage that needs to be disciplined by those on the Sufi path. In Islam, if the self is not disciplined, the spiritual development of a person is hindered. To escape from this stage, one must purify oneself from sins, increase their acts of worship, and draw closer to Allah. The discipline of Nafs al-Ammara is the first step in a person's spiritual journey, and during this process, patience, willpower, and self-discipline are of great importance.
