Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the Book that clarifies the truth. We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'an so that you may understand. We relate to you the best of stories through revelation; previously, you were among the unaware. Yusuf said to his father: "O my father! I saw in my dream eleven stars, and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me." His father said: "O my son! Do not relate your vision to your brothers, lest they contrive against you a plan; indeed, Satan is to man a manifest enemy." "And your Lord will surely choose you and teach you the interpretation of narratives, and complete His favor upon you and upon the family of Jacob, as He completed it upon your forefathers, Abraham and Isaac. Indeed, your Lord is Knowing and Wise." Indeed, in the story of Yusuf and his brothers are signs for those who ask. They said: "Indeed, Yusuf and his brother are more beloved to our father than we, while we are a clan. Indeed, our father is in clear error." "Kill Yusuf or cast him out to another land, so that your father's attention may be exclusively for you; and after that, you will be righteous people." One among them said: "Do not kill Yusuf, but throw him into the bottom of a well; some travelers will pick him up if you do." They said: "O our father! Why do you not entrust us with Yusuf, when we are indeed his well-wishers? Send him with us tomorrow, and he will play and sport, and indeed, we will protect him." Their father said: "It saddens me that you take him; I fear that a wolf would eat him while you are unaware." They said: "And if a wolf should eat him while we are a strong group, indeed, we would then be losers." They agreed to throw Yusuf into the depths of a well. We inspired him, saying: "You will inform them of this deed of theirs while they do not perceive." And they came to their father at night, weeping. They said: "O our father! Indeed, we went racing each other, and left Yusuf by our belongings, and a wolf ate him. But you will not believe us, even if we were truthful." And they brought upon his shirt false blood. He said: "Rather, your souls have enticed you to something. So patience is most fitting. And Allah is the one sought for help against that which you describe." And there came a company of travelers; they sent their water-drawer, and he let down his bucket into the well. He said: "Good news! Here is a boy!" And they took him and concealed him as merchandise. And Allah was Knowing of what they did. And they sold him for a reduced price, a few dirhams; and they were, concerning him, disinterested. And the one from Egypt who bought him said to his wife: "Make his stay comfortable; perhaps he will benefit us, or we will adopt him as a son." And thus We established Yusuf in the land and taught him the interpretation of dreams. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise. And when he reached maturity, We gave him judgment and knowledge. And thus do We reward the doers of good. And she, in whose house he was, sought to seduce him, and she closed the doors and said, "Come, you." He said, "I seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, he is my master; he has made good my residence. Indeed, wrongdoers do not succeed." And she certainly desired him, and had he not seen the proof of his Lord, he would have inclined to her. He would ask for it. Thus, We prevented him from evil and immorality. Indeed, he was among Our sincere servants. Both of them raced to the door, and the woman tore Yusuf's shirt from behind; they encountered her husband at the door. The woman said to her husband, "The punishment of one who intends evil against your family should be either imprisonment or a painful punishment." Yusuf said, "It was she who sought me." A witness from the woman testified, "If his shirt is torn from the front, then she is telling the truth and he is among the liars; but if his shirt is torn from the back, then she has lied and he is among the truthful." Yusuf said, "It was she who sought me." A witness from the woman testified, "If his shirt is torn from the front, then she is telling the truth and he is among the liars; but if his shirt is torn from the back, then she has lied and he is among the truthful." When her husband saw that the shirt was torn from the back, he said to his wife, "Indeed, this is your plot; indeed, your cunning is great." Turning to Yusuf, he said, "Yusuf! Do not mention this to anyone"; and to the woman, he said, "Seek forgiveness for your sin, for you are indeed among the wrongdoers." When her husband saw that the shirt was torn from the back, he said to his wife, "Indeed, this is your plot; indeed, your cunning is great." Turning to Yusuf, he said, "Yusuf! Do not mention this to anyone"; and to the woman, he said, "Seek forgiveness for your sin, for you are indeed among the wrongdoers." A group of women in the city said, "The minister's wife is seeking her slave; her love has consumed her heart; indeed, we see her in clear error." When she heard the women criticizing her, she invited them, prepared couches for them, and when they came, she gave each one a knife. She said to Yusuf, "Come out to them." When the women saw Yusuf, they were astonished and cut their hands, saying, "Glory be to Allah! This is not a human; this is but a noble angel." The minister's wife said, "This is what you criticized me for. I indeed sought to have him, but he refrained due to his chastity. If he does not do what I command him, he will surely be imprisoned and will be among the humiliated." Yusuf said, "My Lord! Prison is more beloved to me than what they invite me to. And if You do not avert their plot from me, I might incline toward them and be among the ignorant." His Lord responded to him and averted their plot from him. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. Then, the family of the woman found it appropriate to imprison him for a time, even though they saw the evidence in Yusuf's favor. In prison with him were two young men. One said, "I saw myself pressing grapes in a dream." The other said, "I saw myself carrying bread on my head, from which the birds were eating." They said, "Interpret for us; we see you to be among the good." Yusuf said, "With the knowledge that my Lord has taught me, I will inform you of its interpretation before the food comes to you. Indeed, I have abandoned the religion of a people who do not believe in Allah and who deny the Hereafter. I follow the religion of my forefathers, Ibrahim, Ishaq, and Yaqub. It is not for us to associate anything with Allah. This is from the favor of Allah upon us and upon mankind, but most of the people are not grateful." "O my fellow prisoners! Are many diverse lords better, or is Allah, the One, the Prevailing?" "What you worship besides Allah is nothing but names you and your forefathers have invented. Allah has not sent down any authority for them. The judgment is only for Allah. He has commanded that you not worship except Him. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know." "O my fellow prisoners! One of you will serve his lord wine, and the other will be crucified, and the birds will eat from his head." He will be food. The matter you inquired about has thus been confirmed." Yusuf said to the one he thought he could save, "Mention me to your lord." But Satan caused him to forget to mention Yusuf to his lord, and thus Yusuf remained in prison for several more years. The king said, "I see in my dream seven fat cows being eaten by seven lean cows; and seven green ears of corn and others that are dry. O assembly! If you are able to interpret dreams, tell me my dream." Those around him replied, "These are confused dreams; we do not know how to interpret such dreams." After a long time, the one who had been freed from prison remembered Yusuf and said, "I will inform you of its interpretation, so send me." Upon arriving at the prison, he said, "O truthful Yusuf! What is the meaning of the seven fat cows being eaten by the seven lean cows, and the seven green ears of corn and the dry ones? Interpret for us, so that I may convey it to the people." Yusuf replied, "You will cultivate for seven consecutive years; leave the surplus of what you harvest in the ear. Then there will come after that seven years of drought, which will consume all that you have stored, except for a little that you will keep." "Then there will come a year in which the people will receive rain, and they will press (the grapes)." The king said, "Bring him to me." When the messenger came to Yusuf, he said, "Return to your lord and ask him, 'What was the matter with the women who cut their hands? Indeed, my Lord is All-Aware of their plot.'" The king asked the women, "What was your condition when you sought to seduce Yusuf?" They replied, "Exalted is Allah! We have not seen any evil from him." The wife of the minister said, "Now the truth has become evident; I was the one who sought to seduce him; indeed, Yusuf is among the righteous." Yusuf said, "My aim was to make it known to the minister that I did not betray him in his absence, and that the plots of the treacherous were not made successful by Allah." "I do not absolve myself; indeed, the soul commands to evil except that which my Lord has mercy upon. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful." The king said, "Bring him to me, so I may take him for myself." When he spoke with him, he said, "Today you are in a position of honor and trust with us." Yusuf said, "Appoint me over the storehouses of the land; indeed, I will be a knowing guardian." Thus, We established Yusuf in that land; he could settle wherever he wished. We bestow Our mercy upon whom We will, and We do not let the reward of the doers of good go to waste. But the reward of the Hereafter is better for those who believe and fear Allah. Yusuf's brothers came and entered upon him, and he recognized them while they did not recognize him. When he had prepared their provisions, he said, "Bring me a brother of yours from your father. Do you not see that I give full measure and that I am the best of hosts?" "If you do not bring him to me, you will have no measure from me, nor will you come near me." They said, "We will try to convince our father, and indeed, we will do it." Yusuf instructed his servants, "Put their merchandise back into their saddlebags, so perhaps they will recognize it when they have gone back to their people that perhaps they will return." When they returned to their father, they said, "O our father! The measure has been forbidden to us, so send our brother with us that we may obtain provisions. We will surely protect him." He said, "Am I to entrust him to you as I entrusted his brother before? But Allah is the best protector, and He is the most merciful of the merciful." When they opened their bags, they found their merchandise had been returned to them. They said, "O our father! What more could we want? Here is our merchandise returned to us; we can bring food for our family with it, and we can protect our brother, and we can also increase the load of one camel." They said, "This is indeed a small matter." Their father said, "I will not send him with you unless you give me a solemn pledge in the name of Allah that you will bring him back to me unless you are all surrounded." When they had given him their pledge, he said, "Allah is Witness to what we say." Their father said, "O my sons! Enter not by one gate, but enter by different gates. And I cannot avail you against Allah in anything; the decision is only for Allah. In Him I have put my trust, and let all those who trust put their trust in Him." They entered as their father had commanded. However, this did not avail them against Allah in any way; it was merely a desire that Jacob had expressed. He certainly knew what We had taught him, but most people do not know. When they entered unto Joseph, he embraced his brother and said, "I am your brother; do not grieve over what they used to do." While Joseph was loading their provisions, he placed a drinking cup into his brother's saddlebag. Then a herald called out, "O caravan, indeed you are thieves!" They turned back and said, "What have you lost?" They said, "We have lost the king's drinking cup; and whoever brings it back shall have a camel's load, and I am responsible for it." They said, "By Allah, you know that we did not come to cause corruption in the land, and we have not been thieves." They said, "Then what is the penalty for it if you should prove false?" They said, "Its penalty is that whoever's saddlebag it is found in, he is the one who will be punished; thus do We punish the wrongdoers." Joseph began his search of their bags before his brother's bag, then he brought it out from his brother's bag. Thus We devised for Joseph; he could not have taken his brother under the king's law unless Allah had willed. We raise in degrees whom We will, and over every possessor of knowledge is one more knowing. They said, "If he has stolen, a brother of his had stolen before." But Joseph kept it concealed within himself and did not disclose it to them. He said, "You are in a worse situation; and Allah is Most Knowing of what you describe." His brothers said, "O Aziz! Indeed, he has an aged father, so take one of us in place of him. Indeed, we see you to be among the doers of good." He said, "I seek refuge with Allah from taking anyone but him with whom we found our property; indeed, we would then be unjust." And when despairing of them, he withdrew to consult with himself. The eldest of them said, "Do you not know that your father has taken from you a solemn pledge in the name of Allah, and that you have failed in your duty regarding Joseph before? So I will not leave this land until my father permits me or Allah decides for me, and He is the best of judges. Go back to your father and say, 'O our father! Indeed, your son has stolen, and we did not witness except for what we knew; and we were not witnesses of the unseen. And ask the people of the city in which we were and the caravan in which we traveled; and indeed, we are being truthful.'" Jacob said, "Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting. Perhaps Allah will bring them all to me. Indeed, He is the Knowing, the Wise." And he turned away from them and said, "Oh, my sorrow over Joseph!" And his eyes became white from grief, for he was of the suppressors. They said, "By Allah, you will not cease remembering Joseph until you become ill or be among the dead." He said, "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah, and I know from Allah that which you do not know." He said, "O my sons! Go and find out about Joseph and his brother and do not despair of relief from Allah. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people." "None lose hope in the mercy of Allah." When his brothers came to the minister, they said: "O Minister! We and our families have fallen into hardship; we have come with a very insignificant property; weigh for us in full measure and give charity; indeed, Allah rewards those who give charity." He said, "Are you aware of what you have done to Yusuf and his brother, without knowing?" They said, "Are you indeed Yusuf?" He said, "I am Yusuf, and this is my brother. Allah has indeed been gracious to us; truly, whoever fears Allah and is patient, let him know that Allah does not waste the reward of the doers of good." They said, "We swear by Allah that Allah has certainly preferred you over us; indeed, we have been wrongdoers." Yusuf said, "Today you will not be reproached; Allah will forgive you. He is the Most Merciful of the merciful. Take this shirt of mine and lay it over my father's face; he will regain his sight; and bring your entire family to me." When the caravan departed to return to their homeland, their father said, "Indeed, I sense the fragrance of Yusuf; do not call me senile." Those around him said, "By Allah, you are still in your old bewilderment." When the bearer of good news came and laid the shirt over Jacob's face, he immediately regained his sight. Then Jacob said, "Did I not tell you that I know from Allah what you do not know?" His sons said, "O our father! Ask for forgiveness for our sins; indeed, we have been wrongdoers." Jacob said, "I will ask my Lord for your forgiveness; indeed, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful." When they came to Yusuf, he embraced his parents and said, "Settle securely in Egypt as Allah wills." He placed his parents upon the throne, and they all fell down in prostration before him. Then Yusuf said, "O my father! This is the interpretation of the dream I saw long ago; my Lord has made it come true. After Satan had caused discord between me and my brothers, my Lord has indeed been gracious to me, bringing you out of the desert. Indeed, my Lord is All-Bounteous to whom He wills; indeed, He is Knowing and Wise." "My Lord! You have granted me sovereignty and taught me the interpretation of dreams. Creator of the heavens and the earth! You are the one who sets my affairs right in this world and the Hereafter; take my soul as a Muslim and join me with the righteous." Thus We relate to you of the unseen; you were not with them when they conspired together to devise their plan. No matter how ardently you desire it, most people will not believe. Thus We relate to you of the unseen; you were not with them when they conspired together to devise their plan. No matter how ardently you desire it, most people will not believe. Yet you do not ask them for any reward for it. The Qur'an is but a reminder for the worlds. In the heavens and the earth are many signs, yet they pass by them, turning away. Most of them do not believe in Allah without associating partners with Him. Are they secure from the punishment of Allah, or are they safe from the coming of the Hour upon them unexpectedly? Say: "This is my path; I invite to Allah with insight, I and those who follow me. Exalted is Allah above what they associate with Him. I am not among the polytheists." Indeed, We sent messengers before you among the people of the towns. Do they not travel the earth and see what was the end of those before them? The abode of the Hereafter is for those who fear Allah. It is good. Do you not reflect? So it was that when the messengers despaired and thought they were denied, Our help came to them. Thus, We save whom We will. Our punishment cannot be repelled from the guilty nation. Indeed, in the stories of the prophets, there are lessons for those of understanding. The Quran is not a fabricated word. Rather, it is a confirmation of what came before it, explaining everything to the believing nation, and a guide and mercy for them.
