All praise is due to Allah, who has sent down a straight Book to His servant, in which there is no crookedness, to warn of a severe punishment from Him and to give glad tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds, that they will have a good reward in which they will abide forever, and to warn those who say, "Allah has taken a son." They have no knowledge of it, nor do their forefathers. Grave is the word that comes out of their mouths; they speak not except a lie. Perhaps you would kill yourself with grief, following them, if they do not believe in this message. We have made that which is on the earth as an adornment for it, that We may test them as to which of them is best in deed. Indeed, We will make that which is upon it a barren ground. Or did you think that the companions of the Cave and the Inscription were among Our signs a wonder? When the young men sought refuge in the Cave and said, "Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance." So We struck upon their ears within the Cave for a number of years. Then We awakened them to make evident which of the two factions was most precise in calculating the time they had remained. We relate to you their story in truth. Indeed, they were young men who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance. And We caused their hearts to be firm when they stood and said, "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. Never will we invoke besides Him any deity. We would have certainly spoken then an excessive transgression. These, our people, have taken besides Him deities. Why do they not bring forth for them a clear authority? And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allah a lie?" We relate to you their story in truth. And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allah a lie? Who is he?" It was said to them, "You have separated yourselves from them and from what they worship besides Allah; therefore, enter the cave so that your Lord may spread out for you of His mercy and make easy for you your affair." If you had looked, you would have seen the sun when it rose inclining away from their cave to the right and when it set, it would pass away from them to the left while they were in a spacious place within the cave. This is one of the signs of Allah; He whom Allah guides is truly guided, and he whom He leads astray, you will never find for him a guiding friend. You would have thought them awake while they were asleep, and We turned them to the right and to the left. Their dog was stretching its forelegs at the entrance. If you had seen them, you would have turned back from them in flight and been filled with terror. We awakened them so that they might question one another. A speaker among them said, "How long have you remained?" They said, "We have remained a day or part of a day." They said, "Your Lord knows best how long you have remained. So send one of you with this silver coin of yours to the city and let him look at which is the best food and bring you provision from it, and let him be cautious and let no one know about you." "For if they come to know of you, they will stone you or turn you back to their religion, and in that case, you will never succeed." Thus, We made their case known so that they might know that the promise of Allah is true and that there is no doubt about the Hour. The people disputed over them. Some said, "Construct a building over them." Their Lord knows best about them. Those who prevailed in their matter said, "We will surely take for ourselves a masjid over them." They will say, "Three, and their fourth is their dog," and they will say, "Five, and their sixth is their dog," guessing at the unseen. And they will say, "Seven, and their eighth is their dog." Say, "My Lord knows best their number; it is known only to a few." So do not argue about them except with an evident argument and do not inquire about them among the people. And do not say of anything, "Indeed, I will do that tomorrow," except when adding, "If Allah wills." And remember your Lord when you forget and say, "Perhaps my Lord will guide me to what is nearer than this to right conduct." And they remained in their cave three hundred years and exceeded by nine. Say, "Allah knows best how long they remained. His is the unseen of the heavens and the earth. How clear of sight is He and how clear of hearing! They have not besides Him any protector, and He does not share in His dominion anyone." Read what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord; there is no changer of His words. And you will not find in other than Him a refuge. And be patient with those who call upon their Lord morning and evening seeking His face, and let not your eyes pass beyond them, desiring the adornment of the worldly life. And do not obey he whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance and who follows his desire and whose affair has exceeded all bounds. Say, "The truth is from your Lord; so whoever wills, let him believe; and whoever wills, let him disbelieve." Indeed, We have prepared for the wrongdoers a fire whose walls will surround them, and if they call for help, they will be supported with water like molten copper that will scald their faces. Wretched is the drink, and evil is the resting place! Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - We will not waste the reward of any who do good deeds. Indeed, for them are gardens of perpetual residence, beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally. They will have therein adorned with bracelets of gold and will wear green garments of fine silk and brocade, reclining therein on adorned couches. Excellent is the reward, and good is the resting place! We do not let the reward of the doers go to waste. Indeed, for those who believe and do righteous deeds, there are gardens of 'Adn, with rivers flowing beneath them. They will wear bracelets of gold and will be dressed in fine and thick silk, reclining on thrones. What a great reward and what a pleasant resting place! And give them the example of two men. We made for one of them two vineyards, and We surrounded both with date palms, and We placed crops in between them. Both gardens produced their fruits and did not fall short thereof in anything. And We caused a river to gush forth within them. He said to his companion while he was conversing with him, "I am more than you in wealth and mightier in [number of] men." And when he entered his garden, he wronged himself by saying, "I do not think that this will perish ever. And I do not think the Hour will come. And even if I should be returned to my Lord, I will surely find better than this as a return." His companion said to him while he was conversing with him, "Have you disbelieved in He who created you from dust and then from a sperm-drop and then fashioned you into a man? But as for me, He is Allah, my Lord, and I do not associate with my Lord anyone. When you entered your garden, why did you not say, 'What Allah wills [will happen]! There is no power except in Allah!' If you see me less than you in wealth and offspring, perhaps my Lord will give me something better than your garden and send upon it a calamity from the heaven, and it will become a smooth, barren land. Or its water will sink down so that you will never be able to seek it." Even though you find me less in wealth and offspring than yourself, should you not say, "Masha'Allah! Strength belongs only to Allah!"? My Lord can give me something better than your garden, and He may send a calamity from the sky upon it, causing it to become a barren wasteland. Or its water may be drained, and you will never find it again," he said. Indeed, his produce was destroyed; in front of the overturned trellises of his vineyard, he rubbed his hands together in regret for the effort he had expended, saying, "I wish I had not associated anyone with my Lord." He had no one to help him besides Allah, and he could not save himself. Here, the power and dominion belong to Allah, who is the true existence. The best reward and the most beneficial outcome are with Him. Tell them that the example of this worldly life is like this: The plants that grow on the earth from the water We send down from the sky mix together, but eventually, they turn into scattered debris blown away by the wind. Allah is the One who has power over all things. Wealth and children are the adornment of worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better with your Lord for reward and better for hope. One day, We will move the mountains, and you will see the earth leveled. We will resurrect them all without leaving any behind and gather them together. When they are lined up before their Lord, it will be said to them, "Indeed, you have come to Us as We created you the first time. You claimed that We would not appoint a meeting for you." When the record of deeds is laid open, you will see the criminals fearful of what is written therein, saying, "Woe to us! How is it that this record leaves nothing small or large without counting it?" They will find what they did present. Your Lord does not do injustice to anyone. We had commanded the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they all prostrated except for Iblis; he was of the jinn and rebelled against the command of his Lord. O children of Adam! Do you take him and his offspring as allies instead of Me, while they are an enemy to you? What an evil exchange for those who wrong themselves! Yet I did not have them present at the creation of the heavens and the earth, nor at their own creation. I did not take the misled as helpers in anything. On that day, Allah will say, "Call upon those whom you claimed were My partners." They will call upon them, but none will answer them. We will place a barrier between them. The criminals will see the Fire and will realize they are about to fall into it, but they will find no escape. Indeed, We have presented various examples to people in this Qur'an. The most argumentative of people is the one who disputes. When the truth has come to people, they are prevented from believing and from seeking forgiveness from their Lord by the same fate that befell those before them, or they await punishment while their eyes are open. We send the prophets only as bringers of good tidings and warners. Yet the disbelievers strive to extinguish the truth with falsehood. They ridicule Our signs and the warnings given to them. Is there anyone more unjust than the one who turns away from the reminders of their Lord when they are reminded and forgets what they have done? They cover their hearts so that they do not understand the Qur'an, and they put heaviness in their ears. Even if you call them to the right path, they will never be guided. Nevertheless, your Lord is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful. If He had intended to hold them accountable immediately for what they earned, He would have hastened for them punishment. But they have an appointed time from which they will find no escape. Because of their injustices, We have destroyed the cities! We had set a time for their destruction. Musa said to his young companion, "I will not stop until I reach the junction of the two seas..." "I am determined to reach the place where the two seas meet, or to walk for years," he said. When they reached the place where the two seas meet, they had forgotten their fish, which slipped away through a hole and swam in the sea. When they moved away from there, Musa said to the young man with him, "Bring out our lunch; indeed, we have become weary on this journey." He replied, "Look! When we reached the rock, I forgot the fish. It was only the devil that made me forget to remember it. The fish astonishingly found its way into the sea." Musa said, "That is what we were seeking." They retraced their steps along the path they had come. In the meantime, they found one of Our servants to whom We had given mercy from Us and taught him knowledge. Musa said to him, "May I follow you so that you may teach me some of the good that you have been taught?" He said, "Indeed, you will not be able to have patience with me, and how can you have patience for that which you do not encompass in knowledge?" Musa said, "If Allah wills, you will find me patient, and I will not disobey you in any matter." He said, "Then, if you follow me, do not ask me about anything until I mention it to you." So they set out; when they boarded a ship, he made a hole in it. Musa said, "Did you make a hole in it to drown its passengers? Indeed, you have done a grievous thing." He said, "Did I not tell you that you would not be able to have patience with me?" Musa said, "Do not blame me for forgetting, and do not burden me with that which I cannot bear." They continued on; eventually, they came across a young boy, and he killed him. Musa said, "Have you killed a soul for having killed no one? Indeed, you have committed a heinous act." He said, "Did I not tell you that you would not be able to have patience with me?" Musa said, "If I ask you about anything after this, then do not accompany me; you have been given an excuse from me." They continued on their way; eventually, they asked the people of a town for food, but the people refused to host them. They found in the city a wall that was about to collapse, and his companion repaired it. Musa said, "If you had wished, you could have taken for it a wage." He said, "This is where we part; I will inform you of the interpretation of that with which you could not have patience." "As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working at sea. I intended to make it defective because there was after them a king who seized every good ship by force." "And as for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared that he would overburden them with transgression and disbelief. So we desired that their Lord grant them in his place one better than him in purity and nearer to mercy." "And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and beneath it was a treasure for them. Their father had been righteous, and your Lord intended that they reach maturity and extract their treasure as a mercy from your Lord. And I did not do it of my own accord. That is the interpretation of that with which you could not have patience." They will ask you about Dhul-Qarnayn. Say, "I will recite to you a mention of him." Indeed, We established him upon the earth and We gave him to everything a way. So he followed a way. Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it set in a spring of black muddy water, and he found a people there. We said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn! Either you punish them or adopt among them goodness." He said, "As for one who wrongs, we will punish him; then he will be returned to his Lord, and He will punish him with an unprecedented punishment. But as for one who believes and does righteousness, he will have the best reward, and we will speak to him from our command with ease." We will punish the doer, then he will be returned to his Lord, and He will subject him to an unseen torment; but for those who believe and do righteous deeds, there are beautiful rewards. We say to him what is easy from Our command." Then he took another path. Finally, when he reached the place where the sun rises, he found it rising upon a people whom We had not clothed with any garments or buildings. Indeed, We were fully aware of all that he did. Then he took another path. Eventually, when he reached between two mountains, he found a people who could hardly understand a word. They said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn! Indeed, Gog and Magog are causing corruption in the land. Should we assign for you a tribute so that you might make between us and them a barrier?" He said, "What my Lord has granted me is better than your tribute. But assist me with strength in labor, so that I may make a firm barrier between you and them. Bring me blocks of iron." When he had filled the gap between the two mountains, he said, "Blow with bellows." Until when he had made it like fire, he said, "Bring me molten copper to pour over it." Thus, Gog and Magog were not able to scale it nor could they pierce it. Dhul-Qarnayn said, "This is a mercy from my Lord. But when the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level; and the promise of my Lord is true." On that Day, We will leave them to surge like waves one over another. And the Horn will be blown, and We will gather them all together. On that Day, We will show Hell to the disbelievers, those whose eyes were veiled from My reminder, and who could not bear to listen. Did the disbelievers think that they could take My servants instead of Me as allies? Indeed, We have prepared Hell as a lodging for the disbelievers. "Shall We inform you of the greatest losers in deeds?" Those whose efforts in this world have gone astray while they thought that they were doing good. They are the ones who deny the signs of their Lord and the meeting with Him. So their works have become worthless, and on the Day of Resurrection, We will not give them any weight. That is their recompense; Hell, for their disbelief, and for mocking My messengers and My signs. But those who believe and do righteous deeds, their abode will be the Gardens of Paradise. They will abide therein forever, desiring no exchange for it. Say, "If the seas were ink for the words of my Lord, the seas would be exhausted before the words of my Lord would be exhausted, even if We brought the like of it as a supplement." Say, "I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your God is one God. So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord, let him do righteous work and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord."
