All praise is due to Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, who has brought forth darkness and light. Yet, those who disbelieve equate others with their Lord. He is the One who created you from clay, then appointed for you a term. A specified term is with Him; yet you doubt. He is the God of the heavens and the earth; He knows what is within you and what you earn. Whenever a sign from their Lord came to them, they turned away from it. When the truth came to them, they denied it. The news of what they mocked will come to them. Have they not seen how many generations We have destroyed before them? We established them on the earth in a way that We have not established you, and We sent down abundant rain from the sky and caused rivers to flow beneath them. Yet, We destroyed them for their sins and raised up another generation after them. Even if We had sent down the Book to you written on paper, and they touched it with their hands, the disbelievers would still say, "This is nothing but clear magic." They said, "Why was not a messenger sent down to him?" If We had sent down an angel, We would have made him a man, and We would have confused them in the same doubt in which they are already confused. Indeed, many messengers were mocked before you, but those who ridiculed them were engulfed by what they used to mock. Say, "Travel through the earth and observe how was the end of those who denied." Say, "To whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth?" Say, "It belongs to Allah." He has taken upon Himself mercy; indeed, He will surely gather you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. Those who have wronged themselves will not believe. To Him belongs whatever is in the night and the day. He is the Hearing, the Knowing. Say, "Shall I take for myself a protector other than Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, who feeds but is not fed?" Say, "Indeed, I have been commanded to be the first of the Muslims," and never be among those who associate others with Allah. Say, "If I disobey my Lord, I fear the punishment of a tremendous Day." On that Day, whoever is turned away from the punishment, indeed, he has received mercy. This is the clear salvation. If Allah afflicts you with a hardship, none can remove it except Him. And if He intends for you good, none can repel His bounty. He is over all things Competent. He is the Sole Disposer over His servants. He is the All-Wise, the All-Aware. Say, "What thing is greater in testimony?" Say, "Allah is Witness between me and you. And this Qur'an has been revealed to me that I may warn you thereby and whomever it reaches. Do you truly testify that there are other gods with Allah?" Say, "I do not testify." Say, "He is but One God, and indeed, I am free of what you associate with Him." Those to whom We have given the Scripture recognize him as they recognize their own children; but indeed, a party of them conceals the truth while they know. And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allah or denies His verses? Indeed, the wrongdoers will not succeed. On the Day of Judgment, We will gather them all, then We will say to those who associated others with Allah, "Where are your partners that you used to claim?" Then they will not find any escape except to say, "By Allah, our Lord, we were not those who associated." Look how they lie against themselves, and the false gods they invented have abandoned them. Among them are those who listen to you, but We have placed veils over their hearts so they do not understand it, and deafness in their ears. Even if they see every sign, they will not believe in them; and when they come to you to argue, the disbelievers say, "This is nothing but the tales of the ancients." They prevent others from the Qur'an and distance themselves from it. Thus, they only harm themselves, but they do not perceive it. When they are brought to the edge of the Fire and halted, you would see them saying, "If only we could be returned to the world, we would not deny the signs of our Lord and would be among the believers!" But no; what they had concealed before has now become evident to them. If they were returned, they would return to what was forbidden to them. Indeed, they are liars. They said, "Life is only this worldly life, and we will not be resurrected." If you could see them when they are presented before their Lord! Allah will say, "Is this not the truth?" They will reply, "Yes, by our Lord, it is the truth." Allah will then say, "Taste the punishment for your disbelief." Indeed, those who deny meeting Allah are the true losers; when the Hour comes upon them unexpectedly, they will bear their burdens on their backs and say, "Woe to us for what we have done in the world!" Look how evil is what they bear! The life of this world is nothing but play and amusement; and the abode of the Hereafter is better for those who fear Allah. Do you not understand? We certainly know that what they say grieves you; but they do not call you a liar; rather, the wrongdoers deny the signs of Allah knowingly. Many messengers were denied before you, and they endured denial and persecution until Our help came to them. There is no one who can change the words of Allah; indeed, news of the messengers has come to you. If their turning away grieves you, and if you had the power to penetrate the earth or ascend to the sky, you would have sought a miracle for them. If Allah had willed, He would have gathered them on guidance. So do not be among the ignorant. Only those who listen will respond to the call. The dead will be resurrected by Allah, and then they will be returned to Him. They said, "If only a sign had been sent down to him from his Lord!" Say, "Indeed, Allah is capable of sending down a sign, but most of them do not know." The animals that walk on the earth and the birds that fly with their wings are communities like you. We have not neglected anything in the Book; then to their Lord they will be gathered. Those who deny Our signs are in darkness, deaf and dumb. Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. Say, "If the punishment of Allah were to come upon you suddenly or openly, would any be destroyed except for the wrongdoing people?" Inform me. We only send messengers as bearers of good news and warners. Whoever believes and reforms, for them there is no fear, nor will they grieve. And those who deny Our signs will be afflicted with punishment for their transgressions. Say, "I do not possess the treasures of Allah, nor do I know the unseen; I am only a messenger." "I do not say anything except what is revealed to me." Say: "Are the one who sees and the one who does not see equal? Do you not reflect?" Warn those who fear their Lord, as they will be gathered to Him. They have no protector or intercessors other than Him. It is hoped that they may be conscious of Allah. Do not drive away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His pleasure. You are not responsible for their account, nor are they responsible for your account, so that you do not become one of the wrongdoers by driving them away. Thus, We test them against each other, so that they may say, "Has Allah favored these over us?" Is Allah not most knowing of the grateful? When those who believe in Our verses come to you, say: "Peace be upon you." Your Lord has decreed upon Himself mercy: that whoever among you does an evil deed out of ignorance, then repents after that and reforms, indeed, he will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful. And We explain the verses in detail so that the path of the criminals may become distinct. Say: "I have been forbidden to worship those you invoke besides Allah." Say: "I will not follow your desires, for then I would have gone astray and would not be among the rightly guided." Say: "Indeed, I am on clear evidence from my Lord, while you have denied it. What I have is not in my control; the judgment belongs only to Allah. He relates the truth and is the best of judges." Say: "If what you seek to hasten were in my control, the matter would have been settled between me and you." Allah is most knowing of the wrongdoers. The keys of the unseen are with Him; none knows them except Him. He knows what is in the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it, and there is no grain in the darkness of the earth, nor anything wet or dry, except that it is in a clear Book. It is He who takes you by night and knows what you earn by day, then He resurrects you therein, until the appointed term. Then to Him will be your return, and He will inform you of what you used to do. He is the sole Judge over His servants; He sends protectors over you. When death comes to one of you, Our messengers take him without failing, then they return him to his true Lord. Know that the judgment is His, and He is the swiftest of accountants. Say: "Who rescues you from the darkness of the land and the sea? You invoke Him in humility and privately, 'If He should save us from this, we will surely be among the grateful.'" Say: "Allah saves you from it and from every distress, yet you associate others with Him." Say: "He is the One who has power to send upon you punishment from above you or from beneath your feet, or to confuse you into sects and make you taste the violence of one another." Look how We explain the verses in various ways, so that they may understand. Indeed, your people have denied the Quran. Say: "I will not be the one to impose punishment upon you." There is a time for every news to come to pass, and you will soon know. When you see those who engage in dispute regarding Our verses, turn away from them until they engage in another topic. And if Satan causes you to forget, then do not sit with the wrongdoing people after remembering. There is no responsibility upon those who are conscious of Allah for their account. But it is only a reminder; perhaps they may be conscious. And leave those who take their religion as amusement and diversion, and whom the worldly life has deluded. And remind with the Quran, lest a soul be given up to destruction for what it has earned; it will have no protector or savior besides Allah, and even if it offers every ransom, it will not be accepted. Those are the ones who will face destruction for what they have earned. The angry drink and the painful torment are for them. Say: "Shall we turn back like one whom the devils have confused on the earth while our companions call us to the right path? After Allah has guided us to the right path, shall we invoke other than Allah, that which does not benefit us or harm us?" Say, "The right path is only the path of Allah. We have been commanded to establish prayer, submitting to the Lord of the worlds, and to fear Allah." To Him you will be gathered. It is He who created the heavens and the earth in truth; when He says "Be," it is. His word is the truth. The day the trumpet is blown, sovereignty belongs to Him. He knows the unseen and the seen. He is the All-Wise, the All-Aware. Ibrahim said to his father Azar, "Do you take idols as gods? Indeed, I see you and your people in clear error." We showed Ibrahim the dominion of the heavens and the earth, that he might be among those of certainty. When the night covered him, he saw a star and said, "This is my Lord!" But when it set, he said, "I do not love those that set." And when he saw the moon rising, he said, "This is my Lord!" But when it set, he said, "If my Lord does not guide me, I will surely be among the people of misguidance." And when he saw the sun rising, he said, "This is my Lord; this is greater!" But when it set, he said, "O my people! Indeed, I am disassociated from what you associate with Allah." "Indeed, I have turned my face toward He who created the heavens and the earth, inclining toward the truth, and I am not of those who associate others with Allah." His people argued with him. He said, "Will you dispute with me concerning Allah while He has guided me? And I do not fear that which you associate with Him, unless my Lord should will something. My Lord encompasses all things in knowledge; will you not remember?" "And how should I fear what you have associated while you do not fear that you have associated with Allah that for which He has not sent down upon you any authority? So which of the two parties has more right to security, if you should know?" Indeed, security is for those who believe and do not mix their belief with injustice. Those are the ones who are truly guided. This is our proof to Ibrahim against his people. We elevate whom We will in degrees. Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing. We gave him Ishaq and Yaqub, and each of them We guided. And before that, We guided Nuh and from his descendants, Dawud, Sulayman, Ayyub, Yusuf, Musa, and Harun - and thus do We reward the doers of good - and Zakariya, Yahya, Isa, and Ilyas - all of them were of the righteous - and Ismail, Al-Yasa, Yunus, and Lut - and all of them We preferred over the worlds. We gave him Ishaq and Yaqub, and each of them We guided. And before that, We guided Nuh and from his descendants, Dawud, Sulayman, Ayyub, Yusuf, Musa, and Harun - and thus do We reward the doers of good - and Zakariya, Yahya, Isa, and Ilyas - all of them were of the righteous - and Ismail, Al-Yasa. We guided Yunus and Lut - whom We exalted above the worlds - to the straight path. We chose some of their fathers, descendants, and brothers, and guided them to the straight path. This is the path of Allah, which He guides whom He wills among His servants. If they associate partners with Him, their deeds will be rendered void. Those to whom We have given the Book, authority, and prophethood are these. If the disbelievers deny them, We will appoint a nation that will not deny them in their place. These are the ones whom Allah has guided to the straight path; follow their way and say, "I do not ask you for any reward for this; it is only a reminder for all." They did not properly evaluate Allah when they said, "Allah has not revealed anything to any human." Say, "Who then sent down the Book which Moses brought as a light and guidance for the people? You write it on paper, showing some of it and concealing much. You have been taught what neither you nor your forefathers knew." Say, "Allah," then leave them in their confusion, playing. This is a blessed Book that We have revealed, confirming what was before it, to warn the Meccans and those around them. Those who believe in the Hereafter will believe in it and will continue to perform their prayers. Who is more unjust than one who fabricates a lie against Allah or says, "I have been inspired," when nothing has been revealed to him, and "I will reveal like what Allah has revealed"? If you could see them when the angels take their souls, striking their faces and their backs, saying, "Yield your souls! Today you will be recompensed with a humiliating punishment for what you used to say against Allah unjustly and for your arrogance towards His signs!" It will be said to them, "Indeed, you have come to Us one by one, as We created you the first time, and you have left behind what We granted you. We do not see with you your intercessors whom you claimed were partners with Allah. Indeed, the ties among you have been severed, and what you used to claim has left you." Indeed, Allah is the one who splits the seed and the fruit. He brings the dead to life. That is Allah; how can you turn away? He is the one who brings forth the dawn, and He made the night a time of rest, and He made the sun and the moon a measure of time. This is the decree of the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing. He is the one who created the stars so that you may find guidance in the darkness of the land and the sea. We have detailed the signs for a people who know. He created you from one soul, and made you settle in the wombs of your mothers. We have detailed the signs for a people who understand. He is the one who sends down water from the sky. With it, We have produced every plant; from it, We have produced grains in clusters, and from the buds of date palms, hanging clusters, and vineyards, olives, and pomegranates. Look at their fruits when they ripen. In these, there are indeed signs for the believers. While He created the jinn, the disbelievers associated partners with Allah. They blindly attributed to Him sons and daughters. Exalted is He above what they describe. He is the Creator of the heavens and the earth from nothing. How can He have children when He has no wife? He created all things; He knows all things. That is your Lord, Allah. There is no deity except Him, the Creator of all things. Therefore, worship Him; He is the Guardian over all things. Eyes cannot comprehend Him, but He comprehends all eyes. He is the Subtle, the All-Aware. Indeed, clear proofs have come to you from your Lord; whoever sees will benefit himself, and whoever is blind will harm himself. I am not a guardian over you. They say to you, "You have read," while We explain the signs in various ways for those who seek knowledge. Follow what has been revealed to you from your Lord; there is no deity except Him, and turn away from those who associate partners with Him. If Allah had willed... They did not worship idols. We did not make you a protector over them, nor are you their representative. Do not insult those they invoke besides Allah, lest they, in their ignorance, insult Allah. Thus, We have made the deeds of every community appear attractive to them; then their return is to their Lord, and He will inform them of what they used to do. If a miracle is shown to them, they will surely swear by all their strength that they will believe in it. Say: "Miracles are only with Allah"; do you not understand that when a miracle comes to them, they will not believe? We turn their hearts and their eyes away, just as they did not believe in it the first time; We leave them in their transgression, wandering blindly. If We were to send down angels to them, and the dead were to speak to them, and We were to gather everything before them, they would still not believe unless Allah wills; however, most of them do not know this. We have made the devils among jinn and men enemies to every prophet, whispering attractive words to one another to deceive. These devils do this so that the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter are inclined towards those words, pleased with them, and continue to commit the sins they have earned. If your Lord had willed, they would not have done it; so leave them to their fabrications. "Should I seek a judge other than Allah while He has sent down to you the Book clearly?" Those to whom We have given the Book know that it has truly been sent down from your Lord. So do not be among the doubters! The word of your Lord has been completed in truth and justice. No one can change His words. He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. If you obey the majority of those on earth, they will lead you astray from the way of Allah. They follow nothing but conjecture; they only guess. Indeed, your Lord knows best who has strayed from His path, and He knows best who are guided. If you believe in the signs of Allah, eat from that over which the name of Allah has been mentioned. What is the matter with you that you do not eat from that which has been mentioned with Allah's name, while He has made clear to you what is forbidden except for necessity? Indeed, many lead others astray by following their desires without knowledge. Your Lord knows best the transgressors. Leave open and secret sins. Those who earn sin will surely be recompensed for what they used to earn. Do not eat from that which has not been slaughtered in the name of Allah; doing so is indeed a transgression against Allah. Indeed, the devils whisper to their allies to argue with you; if you obey them, you will surely be among the polytheists. Is the one whom We have given a light by which to walk among the people, like one who is in darkness and cannot emerge from it? The disbelievers have been made to see their deeds as attractive. Thus, We have made leaders among every town who commit deceitful acts. Yet they do not perceive that they are deceiving themselves. When a sign comes to them, they say, "We will not believe until we are given the same as what was given to the messengers of Allah." Allah knows best whom to appoint as His messenger. A disgrace and severe punishment will reach those who commit sins because of their deceit. Allah opens the heart of whom He wills to Islam, and He constricts the heart of whom He wills, as if he were ascending to the heavens. Allah does this, leads astray those who do not believe. This is indeed the straight path of your Lord. We have elaborated the signs for those who take heed. For them is the abode of peace with their Lord, and He is their protector because of what they used to do. On the Day when Allah gathers them all, He will say, "O assembly of jinn! You misled many of mankind." Those who followed them among mankind will say, "Our Lord! Some of us benefited from others, and we have reached the term You appointed for us." He will say, "The Fire is your permanent abode, as Allah wills." Indeed, your Lord is Wise, Knowing. We will make some of the wrongdoers allies of others because of what they used to earn. "O assembly of jinn and mankind! Did not messengers come to you from among yourselves, reciting to you My signs and warning you of the meeting of this Day?" They will say, "We bear witness against ourselves." And the worldly life had deluded them, and they will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers. This is because Allah would not unjustly destroy the towns while their people were unaware. For each of them are degrees according to what they earned. Your Lord is not unaware of what they do. Your Lord is Self-Sufficient and Full of Mercy. If He wills, He can do away with you and bring forth another people in your place. What has been promised to you will surely come to pass; you cannot escape it. Say, "O my people! Do what you are able to do; indeed, I will do [what I can]. You will surely know to whom will come a punishment that will disgrace him and who is a liar." The wrongdoers, without any doubt, will not succeed. They have set aside a share of Allah's creation from the animals and crops, saying, "This is for Allah," and "This is for our idols." What is for their idols is not given to Allah, but what is set aside for Allah is given to their idols; how evil is their judgment! Thus, those who serve the idols have made it seem good for the idol worshippers to kill their children in order to lead many astray and to confuse their religion. Had Allah willed, they would not have done it. Turn away from them and their lies. They claim, "These animals and crops are forbidden for anyone but whom we wish," and they do not mention the name of Allah when they slaughter some animals, thus attributing falsehood to Him. Allah will punish them for their fabrications. They said, "The offspring in the bellies of these animals are exclusively for our males and forbidden to our wives. But if it is stillborn, then they all share in it." Allah will punish them for such statements, for He is Wise, Knowing. Those who kill their children in ignorance and declare the blessings Allah has provided for them as unlawful have certainly gone astray; they are indeed not on the right path. It is Allah who has created gardens with trellises and without, and He has created crops of various flavors, and the date palm, and the pomegranate, similar and dissimilar. Eat of the fruit when they ripen, and give its due on the day of harvest; and do not waste, for Allah does not like the wasteful. It is Allah who created the animals for burden and for slaughter. Eat of the provision Allah has provided for you, and do not follow the footsteps of Satan; indeed, he is to you a manifest enemy. Eight pairs: of sheep two and of goats two; say, "Has He forbidden the two males, or the two females, or what the wombs of the two females contain? Inform me with knowledge if you are among the truthful." And of camels two, and of cattle two; say, "Has He forbidden the two males, or the two females, or what the wombs of the two females contain? Or were you witnesses when Allah commanded you this?" Who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allah to mislead mankind by his own desires? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people. "Was you present when He commanded you these things?" Who is more unjust than those who fabricate lies against Allah to lead people astray from what they do not know? Allah does not guide the unjust people. Say: "In what has been revealed to me, I find no command to eat anything that is dead, or blood poured forth, or the flesh of swine, for that is impure, and to eat from animals that have been slaughtered in the name of other than Allah is forbidden; but whoever is forced by necessity, without willful disobedience or transgressing due limits, there is no sin upon him. Indeed, your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful." We prohibited the Jews every animal with claws; and of the cattle and the sheep, We prohibited their fat, except what is on their backs or their entrails or what is mixed with bone. This is a recompense for their transgression. Indeed, We are truthful. If they deny you, say: "Your Lord's mercy is vast; and His punishment cannot be repelled from the guilty people." Those who associate partners with Allah will say: "If Allah had willed, neither we nor our forefathers would have worshiped anything other than Him, nor would we have made anything unlawful." Those before them said the same until they tasted Our punishment. Say to them: "Do you have any knowledge that you can produce for us? You follow nothing but conjecture, and you do nothing but guess." Say: "The conclusive evidence belongs to Allah. If He had willed, He would have guided you all." Say: "Bring forth your witnesses who will testify that Allah has prohibited this." If they testify, do not testify with them; and do not follow the desires of those who deny Our signs and do not believe in the Hereafter; they make others equal to their Lord. Say: "Come, I will inform you of what your Lord has prohibited to you: that you associate nothing with Him, and to parents, good treatment; and do not kill your children for fear of poverty; We provide for them and for you. And do not approach immoralities, whether open or concealed. And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden, except by right. This has He instructed you that you may use reason." And do not approach the orphan's property except in a way that is best until he reaches maturity. And give full measure and weight in justice. We do not burden a soul beyond its capacity. And when you speak, be just, even if it concerns a near relative. And fulfill the covenant of Allah. This has He instructed you that you may remember. And this is My straight path, so follow it. And do not follow other ways, for they will separate you from His way. This has He instructed you that you may become righteous. Then We gave Moses the Scripture, completing Our favor upon the one who does good and explaining all things in detail and as guidance and mercy, that perhaps they would believe in the meeting with their Lord. This is a blessed Book which We have revealed; so follow it. And do not say, "If only we had been given a Scripture like those two peoples," or "If we had been given a Book, we would have been better guided than them." For indeed, there has come to you clear proof from your Lord, and guidance and mercy. So who is more unjust than one who denies the signs of Allah and turns away from them? We will make those who turn away from Our signs taste a severe punishment because of their turning away. This is a blessed Book which We have revealed; so follow it. It is the Book; follow it. "Do not say, 'We have no knowledge of what the two communities before us read,' or 'If a Book were sent down to us, we would be more guided than they.' Beware, lest you be shown mercy. Indeed, it has come to you from your Lord as a proof, a guide, and a mercy. Who is more unjust than one who denies the signs of Allah and turns away from them? We will punish those who turn away from Our signs with a severe punishment because of their turning away. Are they waiting for the angels to come to them, or for your Lord to come, or for some of the signs of your Lord to come? The day some of the signs of your Lord come, no soul will benefit from its faith if it had not believed before or earned through its faith some good. Say to them, 'Wait, indeed we are waiting.' You have no relation with those who have divided their religion and become sects. Their affair is with Allah; He will inform them of what they used to do. Whoever brings a good deed will have ten times its like, and whoever brings an evil deed will be recompensed only with its equivalent; and they will not be wronged. "Indeed, my Lord has guided me to a straight path, to an upright religion, the religion of Ibrahim, who was not of those who associate others with Allah." Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds. He has no partner; thus I have been commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims." Say, "Should I seek a lord other than Allah while He is the Lord of all things? And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you concerning that in which you used to differ." It is He who has made you successors upon the earth and has raised some of you above others in degrees [of rank] to test you in what He has given you. Indeed, your Lord is swift in penalty; but indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful.
