Obligation

Obligation refers to the acts of worship that a Muslim is required to fulfill in the Islamic faith. These acts are explicitly stated in fundamental sources such as the Qur'an and Sunnah. Obligations are generally divided into two main categories: Farz-ı Ayn and Farz-ı Kifaye. Farz-ı Ayn includes the acts of worship that each individual must perform on their own, while Farz-ı Kifaye refers to acts of worship that, when performed by a group of Muslims, relieve others of the obligation. Obligations are considered indicators of a person's faith and their standing within the community, and neglecting them is regarded as a major sin.
