Nafs al-Lawwama

"Nafs al-Lawwama is the level of the self where the individual criticizes themselves and questions their mistakes."

Spiritual & Deep Meaning

Nafs al-Lawwama is a stage where a person tries to understand their mistakes by questioning their own actions. At this stage, the individual becomes aware of their wrongdoings and criticizes themselves. In Sufism, this level indicates the beginning of the process of self-recognition and correction. For the self, at this stage, becomes a being that experiences conflict between good and evil. The person can enter a quest for inner peace by listening to the voice of their heart. Those in this state of self also wish to purify themselves with feelings of forgiveness and remorse. Transitioning from Nafs al-Lawwama to the stage of Laviye is a significant step in the individual's development and approach to Allah. Patience, self-discipline, and self-recognition are essential in the training of this stage.
