Nafs al-Ammarah
"Nafs al-Ammarah represents a person's negative and base instincts."
Spiritual & Deep Meaning
Nafs al-Ammarah represents the lowest level of desires and wishes within a person in Sufism. This concept expresses the erroneous behaviors, sins, and bad habits that occur when a person is guided by their base self. In Sufi training, confronting Nafs al-Ammarah is one of the first steps in a person's spiritual development. This stage is extremely important for recognizing one's self, standing against difficulties, and adopting moral values. Nafs al-Ammarah is not only an individual concept but also shapes the individual's impact on society. In Sufism, the goal is to gradually ascend from this concept to Nafs al-Mutmainnah. Being at peace with Nafs al-Ammarah is a prerequisite for a person to reach higher spiritual levels.
