Nafs al-Ammarah
"Nafs al-Ammarah is the level of the self that represents the lowest and worst desires of a person."
Spiritual & Deep Meaning
Nafs al-Ammarah represents the most basic passions of a person in Sufism. This level is the state in which a person experiences inner unrest and is closest to sins and prohibitions. Nafs al-Ammarah constantly directs a person towards bad deeds, and therefore, it is considered a stage that needs to be disciplined by those knowledgeable in Sufism. In Islam, if the self is not disciplined, the spiritual development of a person is hindered. To escape from this stage, a person must purify themselves from sins, increase their acts of worship, and draw closer to Allah. The discipline of Nafs al-Ammarah is the first step in a person's spiritual journey, and in this process, patience, willpower, and self-discipline are of great importance.
