Self-Knowledge
"Self-knowledge is the recognition of one's inner world."
Spiritual & Deep Meaning
Self-Knowledge is one of the most fundamental teachings of Sufism. This concept means that an individual recognizes their own inner world, soul, and self. Knowing oneself is the first step on the path of purification and maturation. In Sufism, a person who knows their essence will become aware of their mistakes and shortcomings, thus experiencing a transformation within themselves. Self-knowledge is important in the process of spiritual journey (seyr-i süluk); because it is essential for the person's spiritual development and spiritual path. By knowing oneself, a person learns to empathize with themselves and others. Self-knowledge increases the need for the presence of a guide in Sufism, as a journey without a guide can be fraught with dangers. Indeed, the saying 'Know yourself, know your Lord' emphasizes this truth.
