Consciousness of Death and the Hereafter: Recommendations to Avoid Being Captivated by the World

Islam's Compass 12 Minutes

Introduction

Death is the inevitable reality of humanity. The awareness that every living being has an end reminds us of the transience of this worldly life and encourages us to prepare for the abode of the Hereafter. The consciousness of the Hereafter enables us to live without being engrossed in worldly distractions, without forgetting the true purpose of life.

Historical/Religious Background

It is frequently emphasized in the Qur'an that the worldly life is temporary and the Hereafter is eternal.

"Every soul shall taste death. Then you will be returned to Us." (Ankabut, 29:57)
This verse reminds us of the transience of life and advises that one should always keep the consciousness of the Hereafter alive. Our Prophet (PBUH) also frequently reminded his community about death and the Hereafter, advising them not to be deceived by worldly life.

Detailed Lists and Practices

There are certain prayers and practices to keep the consciousness of the Hereafter alive:

  • Remembrance of Death: Thinking about death and the Hereafter every day is an important step to avoid being captivated by worldly life.
  • Prayer: "Rabbi inni zalamtu nefsi fagfirli" (My Lord! I have wronged my soul, so forgive me). This prayer helps the person to recognize their mistakes and seek forgiveness.
  • Charity and Spending: Giving the zakat of one's wealth and helping those in need reduces attachment to worldly possessions.

Lessons from Scholars

Imam Ghazali likens worldly life to a guesthouse and says:

"The world is a bridge, cross it but do not build houses upon it."
This understanding reminds us not to develop excessive attachment to worldly pleasures. Mevlana also expressed that death is not an end, but a new beginning:
"Death is the reunion with the beloved."

Conclusion

Internalizing the consciousness of death and the Hereafter makes our worldly life more meaningful. Living as if we will face death at any moment encourages us to become better individuals. We pray to Allah to grant us a heart that keeps this consciousness alive at all times. O Lord, make us among those who prepare for the Hereafter without being engrossed in worldly distractions.
