Anger Management: The Sunnahs of Our Prophet When He Became Angry

Islam's Compass 10 Minutes

Introduction

As human beings, we all occasionally fall prey to anger. Anger is a powerful emotion that, if not controlled, can harm both our personal relationships and our spiritual journey. However, the guidance that Islam offers on this matter can lead us to become better individuals. Our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has shown us through his Sunnahs what we should do in moments of anger.

Historical/Religious Background

Controlling anger is a topic frequently addressed in the Qur'an and Hadith. Allah the Exalted praises those who suppress their anger and are forgiving. In one verse, it is stated:

"They control their rage and pardon the people. And Allah loves the doers of good." (Al-Imran 3:134)

Our Prophet has also provided many recommendations regarding anger management in his Hadiths. For example:

"The true wrestler is not the one who overcomes his opponent in wrestling, but the one who controls himself when he is angry." (Bukhari, Adab, 76)

Detailed Lists and Applications

There are many practical applications that Islam offers for controlling anger. Here are some practices recommended by our Prophet:

  • Performing Ablution: Performing ablution when you are angry can calm your anger with the refreshing effect of water.
  • Sitting or Lying Down: If you are standing, sit down; if you are sitting, lie down. These simple position changes can help you control your anger.
  • Seeking Refuge: Saying "A'udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim" to seek refuge in Allah from the whispers of the devil.
  • Supplication: Pray to calm your anger. For example: "Allahummeghfir li zenbi ve ezhib gayza kalbi ve ecirni mineş şeytani."

Lessons from Scholars

Great Islamic scholars have also left many wise words and cautionary tales regarding anger management. Imam Ghazali advised that anger can cloud a person's intellect, and thus one should always remain patient and calm. According to one narration, Imam Shafi'i, while showing patience towards someone who angered him, said:

"Anger is the enemy of reason. The one who loses their reason loses themselves. Patience is the key to every matter."

Conclusion

Anger is an inevitable reality of our lives. However, by following the Sunnahs of our Prophet, we can manage this emotion and advance further in our spiritual journey. With Allah's permission, when we conquer our anger, we will have taken an important step towards leading a more peaceful and meaningful life. I pray that He makes us among those who have control over their anger. Ameen.
