The Material and Spiritual Harms of Wastefulness: Recognizing the Value of Blessings

Islam's Compass 10 Minutes

Introduction

There are many elements that shape human life; one of them is recognizing the value of the blessings we possess. Wastefulness means using these blessings while disregarding their value and squandering them. Islam guides us in this matter, as in every aspect of life. The place and importance of wastefulness in our spiritual world is significant. Living without wastefulness helps us establish balance in both our material and spiritual lives.

Historical/Religious Background

Wastefulness is a behavior frequently warned against in the Quran and Sunnah. Those who waste are described as the brothers of Satan in the Quran, and we are advised to be cautious in this regard. Wastefulness is not limited to material wealth; time, health, and other blessings should also be considered within this scope.

"Eat and drink, but do not be wasteful; indeed, Allah does not like the wasteful." (Surah Al-A'raf, Verse 31)

Wastefulness in Hadith

Our Prophet (peace be upon him) avoided wastefulness in his life and warned his community about it. He educated his companions on this matter and explained the harms of wastefulness to them.

Detailed Lists and Practices

We can incorporate some practices into our lives to prevent wastefulness:

  • Planned Shopping: Creating a needs list to avoid unnecessary expenses.
  • Meal Planning: Controlling portions and utilizing leftover food to prevent waste.
  • Time Management: Making daily plans to use time effectively.
  • Health and Energy: Taking good care of our bodies to avoid wasting our health.

Supplications

A supplication you can recite to be protected from wastefulness:

Arabic: اللّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ
Transliteration: Allahümme ikfinî bi halâlike an harâmike ve ağninî bi fadlike ammen sivâk.
Translation: O Allah! Protect me with Your lawful provisions from Your prohibitions, and do not make me in need of others through Your grace.

Lessons from Scholars

Islamic scholars have offered many pieces of advice and wise sayings regarding the harms of wastefulness. Imam Ghazali stated that wastefulness darkens a person's heart and hinders their spiritual development. Additionally, the great mystic Mevlana emphasized the importance of this issue by saying, "The wasteful is one who does not recognize the value of blessings."

Conclusion

Preventing wastefulness increases peace and abundance both individually and socially. Each blessing should be regarded as a grace and trust from Allah. Living by recognizing the value of these blessings will bring us happiness in both this world and the Hereafter. We beseech our Lord to protect us from wastefulness and to make us among those who appreciate the value of blessings.
