The Spiritual Fire of Backbiting: A Sin Equivalent to Eating the Flesh of Your Dead Brother

Islam's Compass 10 Minutes

Introduction

The religion of Islam places great importance on the preservation of moral values that connect individuals to one another. Among these values, it is essential for individuals to be compassionate, respectful, and honest towards one another. However, there exists a matter among these values that we often violate unknowingly: backbiting. Backbiting inflicts such deep wounds on our spiritual world that it is likened to eating the flesh of one's dead brother in the Qur'an. In this article, we will examine the wounds that backbiting inflicts on our souls and society. To understand how dangerous this sin is, we will delve deeply into its spiritual dimension and its place in Islam.

Historical/Religious Background

Backbiting has been one of the important topics emphasized since the beginning of Islam. In the Qur'an, Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 12, it is stated:

"O you who have believed! Avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother while he is dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of Repentance and Merciful."

This verse clearly illustrates the magnitude of backbiting as a sin. Our Prophet (peace be upon him) also highlighted the harms of backbiting in many of his hadiths. On one occasion, he asked, "Do you know what backbiting is?" and then defined it as "mentioning your brother with something he dislikes."

Detailed Lists and Practices

As Muslims, we must take care of our tongues and hearts and avoid backbiting. Here are ways to protect ourselves from backbiting:

  • Reflection: Asking ourselves, "How might my words harm the person in front of me?"
  • Remembering Repentance: When we realize we have engaged in backbiting, we should immediately repent and intend not to do it again.
  • Prayer: Seeking help from Allah. Here is a prayer you can read regarding this matter:

Arabic: اللهم اجعلني من الذين يحفظون ألسنتهم من الغيبة والنميمة.

Transliteration: Allahumme ic'alni minellezine yahfazune elsinetihim minel gıybeti ven'nemime.

Translation: O Allah! Make me among those who protect their tongues from backbiting and slander.

Lessons from Scholars

Great Islamic scholars have given many pieces of advice regarding the harms of backbiting. Imam Ghazali stated, "Backbiting is a disease that darkens the heart. When a person engages in backbiting, a black spot forms in their heart." Another scholar, Hasan al-Basri, made an analogy by saying, "Backbiting is giving away one's good deeds to the person being backbitten." These words reveal how backbiting harms not only our tongues but also our souls.

Conclusion

To heal the wounds that backbiting inflicts on our spiritual world, we must first take care of our tongues and avoid backbiting. This is not only an individual effort but a societal responsibility. Let us pray to Allah to protect our tongues and hearts from evils. "O Lord! Keep our tongues and hearts pure. Protect us from backbiting and all evil words. Ameen." Let us not forget that the fire of backbiting harms not only us but also the society we live in. Therefore, to attain spiritual peace, let us take care of our tongues and hearts.
